01 / Challenge

Language, habits and cultural knowledge can make shared participation in family traditions difficult.

02 / Goal

Help family members understand each other’s traditions and build connection through shared celebration.

03 / Role

Prototyping & Testing

04 / Outcome

A connected system: a physical family calendar, a mobile app, and wearable interaction.

01 / Context

Understanding the Problem

Traditions carry more than dates. They hold a sense of identity and belonging. In cross-cultural families, that meaning is not always easy to share.

  • Cultural differences can become everyday friction
  • Participation is often passive rather than shared
  • Existing tools inform, but rarely create emotional connection

02 / Discovery

Research & Opportunity

I combined competitive analysis, questionnaires, and interviews to understand how cross-cultural families celebrate traditions, where friction occurs, and what support would feel meaningful.

  1. 01

Families need tangible moments of connection

  2. 02

Cultural learning should feel lightweight and approachable

  3. 03

Shared rituals matter more than passive information

03 / Exploration

Concept Development

I explored how a shared family object, wearable interaction, and mobile experience could work together. The concept evolved into a modular physical calendar with wearable pendants and an app for learning, planning, and memory-making.

The Final Experience

One connected experience.
At home, on screen, and wherever family goes.

01 / At home

Physical Calendar

A shared object for discovering festivals and triggering interaction.

02 / When apart

Wearable Pendant

A personal extension that keeps family members emotionally connected when apart.

03 / On screen

OurFest App

A digital companion for learning, planning, creating, and preserving memories.

05 / Digital companion

App Experience

The app supports the family calendar by helping users explore festivals, co-create celebrations, plan activities, and preserve family memories.

  • 01Discover festivals
  • 02Create shared celebrations
  • 03Plan activities
  • 04Save memories

A little closer, every day.

06 / Making it tangible

From Sketch to Prototype

I translated the concept from sketches into a physical form, exploring proportion, modular components, and interaction details through 3D modeling and prototyping.

07 / In everyday life

User Journey

The storyboard follows cross-cultural connection through everyday moments, shared celebrations, and long-distance family interaction.

Six story panels: cultural misunderstanding, creating a shared festival, staying connected while apart, celebrating together, preserving memories, and revisiting the tradition one year later.
From a moment of misunderstanding to a tradition of their own.

08 / Learning through testing

Testing & Reflection

What Worked

  • The wearable interaction felt personal and emotionally meaningful
  • The physical component made the experience tangible and shared
  • Users found the festival creation concept engaging

What Needed Improvement

  • Some interactions needed clearer guidance
  • The wearable should be lighter and more comfortable
  • The creation flow could be more structured

This project helped me understand how product design and UI design can work together to support emotional connection. It also strengthened my interest in designing experiences that move across objects, screens, and everyday rituals.

09 / Looking ahead

Next Steps

01

Refine AI Creation Flow

Make hybrid festival creation clearer and more guided.

02

Improve Prototype Fidelity

Develop the interaction details and wearable prototype further.

03

Expand Cultural Inclusivity

Test with more diverse cross-cultural families and traditions.
